The Punjab government has formally authorised the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department to collect sanitation waste tax under the Suthra Punjab programme and has also issued a notification in this regard.
Earlier, verbal instructions had been issued to the Excise Department to collect the waste tax, but the department had requested a written notification, which has now been approved.
The provincial government had imposed the waste tax across the province from July 1 of the ongoing financial year.
The Local Government Department, Suthra Punjab Department and municipal corporations had badly failed to collect the waste tax, and by September 30, not even 15 per cent of the waste tax for the first quarter of the new financial year 2026-27, from July 1, had been collected.
Following this, the authority to collect the tax has now been handed over to the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department.
The Excise Department will collect the waste tax in the same manner as property tax bills. The department will issue waste tax bills next month, covering three months from July 1 to September 30.
According to the approved tariff, the monthly fee for domestic consumers in urban areas will be Rs300 for houses up to five marlas, Rs500 for five to 10 marlas, Rs1,000 for 10 to 20 marlas, Rs2,000 for 20 to 40 marlas and Rs5,000 for properties measuring more than 40 marlas.
