LAHORE:
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday visited Jati Umra, in keeping with a long-held Sharif family tradition, where he met PML-N President and his elder brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, as well as his niece, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
During the meeting, the prime minister briefed the elder Sharif on the overall situation of the country. He also shared details regarding the evolving situation in the Middle East and Pakistan’s efforts aimed at promoting peace in the region.
The prime minister took Nawaz Sharif into confidence on global oil prices and the government’s measures to provide relief to the public. Both leaders also discussed the prevailing political situation in the country.
It is pertinent to mention that the former prime minister has largely remained on the sidelines vis-a-vis matters of the central government, and has instead been more active in the affairs of the Punjab government, where his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, serves as chief minister.
These briefings, having no bearing on day-to-day decision-making at the centre, appear largely symbolic in nature.
Later in the day, the prime minister attended the PSL 11 final at Gaddafi Stadium, where he met both teams, Peshawar Zalmi and Hyderabad Kingsmen. Upon arrival, he was received by PCB chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The prime minister watched the match and later met players from both teams individually.
