ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Rana Sanaullah have been appointed members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan.
According to a notification issued by the commission, Bilawal and Sanaullah were made members after the approval of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who is also chairperson of the JCP.
Bilawal, a member of the National Assembly, and Rana Sanaullah, the leader of the house in the Senate, were both made members of the treasury benches in their respective Houses.

“In pursuance of paragraph (vii) of clause 2 of Article 175A of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973,” the notification said. It added that Bilawal and Sanaullah were notified as members “on nomination of the leader of the House in the Senate and the leader of the House in the National Assembly.”
Yesterday, JCP sources told The Express Tribune that Bilawal was interested in becoming a member of the JCP. The sources had also said that PPP Senator Farooq H Naek and PML-N MNA Sheikh Aftab had resigned as members of the JCP, paving the way for a possible reshuffle in the commission’s parliamentary representation.

The development came amid reported dissatisfaction within the PPP leadership over the failure to secure the appointment of its preferred candidates as judges of the superior courts.
The JCP was one of three judicial forums, alongside the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the Practice and Procedure Act (PAPA) committee of the Supreme Court, which were reconstituted in view of the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The JCP is the constitutional body that elevates judges to the superior courts, while the SJC is the forum that hears complaints filed against judges of superior courts in view of alleged misconduct and the PAPA committee of the Supreme Court forms benches and lists cases.
