Pakistan’s swimmers Hareem Malik and Mishael Aisha Hyat finished outside the qualifying places in the women’s 50m breaststroke heats at the 20th Asian Games at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Sunday.
Hareem Malik finished 22nd overall with a 36.52 seconds timing, while Mishael Aisha Hyat was 24th after she clocked 37.02 seconds.
China’s Tang Qianting dominated the event, winning her heat in 29.50 seconds to top the overall standings. The reigning world-record holder came within 0.06 seconds of her own Asian record of 29.44, and her time was also below the Games record of 29.92.
Japan’s Satomi Suzuki finished second in 30.35 seconds, 0.85 seconds behind Tang, while China’s Yang Chang took third in 30.56. Japan’s Kotomi Kato was fourth in 31.06.
The other swimmers listed in the qualifying positions were South Korea’s Park Sieun and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Pei-wun, who both clocked 31.62 seconds, followed by Singapore’s Tan Mikayla in 31.86, Macau’s Pui Lam Chen in 31.92, Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Yi-chen in 32.19 and Vietnam’s Thuy Nguyen in 32.28.
The results list the first ten swimmers as progressing, with Tang, Suzuki, Yang, Kato, Park, Lin, Tan, Pui Lam, Chiu and Thuy qualifying.
Indonesia’s Adellia was the highest-ranked swimmer outside those qualifying places, finishing 11th in 32.31 seconds. Hong Kong’s Man Wui Kiu was 12th in 32.53, followed by Thailand’s Phurichaya Junyamitree in 32.70.
The remaining field included Palestine’s Valerie Tarazi and Marina Abushamaleh, Lebanon’s Lynn El Hajj, Thailand’s Thitirat Inchai, Singapore’s Tay Jiaqi, Mongolia’s Maral Batsanal and Nomin-erdene Batchuluun, Bahrain’s Noor Taha, Pakistan’s Hareem Malik and Mishael Aisha Hyat, and Bangladesh’s Mst Mukti Khatun.
Laos’ Tamsiri Niyomxay did not appear.
