Lawyer Jibran Nasir has alleged serious negligence in the investigation into the murder of Mir Raza, questioning the handling of key evidence including the victim’s smart watch, the guesthouse DVR and his mobile phone, and demanding a criminal inquiry against three police officers.
Speaking at a press conference, Nasir said reports from the University of Karachi indicated Raza had been administered a local anaesthetic and that the body was 20 to 22 hours old. Nasir alleged that the victim had remained in someone’s captivity for around 12 hours.
He further said that Mir Raza’s smart watch was taken from his family on the third day after his death and remained with SSP Samiullah Soomro for eight days. He described keeping the smart watch for eight days as “criminal conduct”.
He also alleged that the guesthouse DVR was carried around by the SHO, while Mir Raza’s mobile phone was sent to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). Nasir said SSP Zubair Nazir Sheikh was already facing a Rs50 million extortion case and alleged that SSP Investigation Usman Sadozai had been sent to Kashmir.
He said acid bottles had been found near the Water Board office and the police had been informed about them. He also called for the statements of the victim’s family to be recorded, saying he had repeatedly asked police officials to do so.
Meanwhile, father Mir Hassan has alleged that police pressured his son’s friends to portray his death as a suicide and warned them against meeting the family. He said his friends had made it clear that he could not have committed suicide.
He alleged the family had still not been provided the CCTV footage of the guesthouse despite asking for it repeatedly and that the killers had been given ample time to escape. He reiterated that the family wanted the circumstances surrounding Raza’s death to be properly investigated.
